Why’d you stop drawing?

Remember when you were a kid? When teachers had to tell you to stop doodling on your desk?

Maybe it was a me-thing, but I couldn’t be trusted with folders. My arms, my tests, on occasion my walls: nothing was safe from 12-year-old me with a marker.

As we grow up, though, it feels like we lose that desire to create. To draw, paint, sing. We get bogged down in the why/how instead of the joy of making something ours.

So what do we do about it? Let the creative rot consume us? Give up on our dreams of making art we love?

No! Instead, we draw a stick figure.

Now, I can hear you. “Carlianne,” you’re saying, “Why am I drawing a stick figure? I already know how to do that. How is this helpful?”

To that, I say… “ because it’s fun.”

Trust the process. Together, let’s make a person!

Step 1: Draw a circle for the head.

Step 2: Then a torso, about the same size as the head to hit those perfect cartoony proportions.

Step 3: Add the arms, much higher on the torso than you’re used to, reaching just below the ‘hips’ where your legs start.

Step 4:  Add a face, and congrats! You made a person! Or character, or cutey patootie. Whatever your heart desires~

With just this formula, you can start creating characters, poses, and full scenes. Don’t believe me?

Here’s 3 poses you can do with the exact ‘rules’ I just described.

It’s easy. It’s fun. And more than anything, it’s getting you drawing again. It’s keeping your passion going and improving a little every day.

Speaking of… every week I’ll be showing you a new Doodle of the Day you can do right at your desk. You’ll need only a pencil (or marker, or tablet, or stick-in-the-dirt) and a few minutes to create something Instagram-worthy.

If you want a chance to have your very own doodle featured in the community, you can enter your submissions every week in the Carlianne Creates community.
